stop cock
A stopcock is a form of valve used to control the flow of a liquid or gas. The term is not precise and is applied to many different types of valve. The only consistent attribute is that the valve is designed to completely stop the flow when closed fully.
We've recently fitted a new bathroom shower, taps and bath. The cold tap on the bathroom basin splutters and bangs badly if it isn't opened quite far. The other taps are fine apart from when they are turned off there is a bang. Not a load of knocks just one bang (not too loud but noticeable)...

My internal stop tap is leaking and the water company have confirmed that there is no outside stop tap (and that they don't fit them to properties older than 1944). The plumber said that there isn't sufficient height on the internal pipework for it to be frozen. Can anyone help ? Thanks

The hot water tap at the kitchen has stopped working which I think may be the washer that needs replacing. I cannot see anything to turn off the water supply to the tap ie under the sink etc. If I turn off the water at...

Hi there, I hope someone can help.
The ball valve in my toilet wasn't working, so I tightened the nut to try and lower the ball. However it snapped so the water started spewing out. I held the little valve manually and it stopped, so that part works. I've currently got a clamp holding the...

Just had a call from a referral about stopcock leaking at rear of dishwasher. I need to turn off outside stopcock and then change inner. Can I replace inner with a screwdriver operated compression valve? Also, any tips for the outside stopcock?
Advice please - i need to replace the stopcock under my kitchen sink. There is a limited amount of 15mm pipework either side of the existing stop so i am thinking i should leave the existing olive and nut on and fit the body of a new stop in between ?
If i did take the old olive and nut off...
