Maybe a stupid question lads and ladies but when soldering is it a health and safety requirement to wear gloves when soldering as I believe it to be a ball ache and possibly more dangerous, love to know some facts. Site manager has had a hissy fit over the subject.
Thanks
Hello Lads/Lasses
New to the forum so are with me
What effective methods do you lot use to stop water dribbling out of the pipe when trying to solder a new fitting as a repair

So,
The story goes like this:
Went to fit a new rad today but plumb centre gave me a double panel instead of a single and because I was in a rush I didn't clock this error. I just stuck it in the van and went to the property.
Anyway, drained the system, put on shiny new valves and hung the...
Hi guys,
Quick question I've used rubber bungs to create vacuums before to remove and replace rad valves but I've not yet used them on cold water storage to solder joints on cold feeds to hot water cylinders.
I have a cold feed I may have to solder a 3/4" socket on to(which is also less...
Hi All,
first post here although have been a lurker for a while. I am hoping one of the pro's can advise me on the best practise and also most workable way to do this.
I have removed a large radiator from my hallway and want to cap the tails off. I am 'DIY' proficient at soldering and...

So I have been working as a plumber for just under a year now and normally when I have to cut into existing pipe to add an addition to it, I find myself always using compression as the pipes still have a little bit of water in them. When I try to dry them off I begin to solder and I always...

Hi all when you solder, a copper to copper pipe do you remove the heat source when you apply the solder, when the joint is hot enough?
Corgi says you should? confused thanks?
So I'm repairing this pipe that goes to the city water, a 3/4 inch pipe as I'm here in the US(just grabbed the 1st plumbing forum I could find), which requires replacing from that broken ball valve down to the end of this leaky copper pipe where it meets PVC about a foot, or... Idk, under a...
Hi all. Recently been having trouble burning the solder joints(black). I can't understand why, I haven't changed the torch or anything. It's really winding me up. Low flame high flame nothing helps???
Had look around for a blowtorch free method for copper and came across two;
One I looked at in past and thought likely others come across and tried, Antex PipeMaster and the like - any good?
And second one, Just For Copper by a South African company, WRAS (?) approved too. Anybody seen/used?
Hi all,
From experience what is the best soldering mat out there. Bought one from toolstation but it's rubbish and leaves burn marks behind. Has anyone used the monument or rothenberger etc ones as after a descent one?
thanks.
Got to replace a leaking trap on a basin but its connected straight to 1" copper. There's a 11/4" - 1" adaptor on the waste, a 1" brass trap and then 1" copper leading god knows where.
Ideally like to replace the waste and trap in 11/4" but is there a universal fitting that goes straight from...
Hey when say piping up a kitchen sink were the pipes are elbowed out behind the unit via a push fit elbow taking the plastic pipe to copper coming in to the unit. You would usualy want to elbow the pipe straight up to go to the kitchen tap. However his wold mean soldering ly a few inches from...
I solder by adding about 1/2 to 3/4 diameters worth of solder to each end of the fitting, I know others do it by adding about a diameters worth to only one end of the fitting (if it's an end feed couple) and letting capillary action take over feeding it to the other end.
What's your style and...
Hi all. Just been to look at my first job working on a hotel. A leak on a 35mm hot water downpipe where it tees off to 28mm.
I have actually never soldered anything larger than 28mm before to be honest. Is 35mm and larger soldered the same way, but just running the blowtorch around the...
Hi all. Can anyone point me in the direction of a soldering mat that is suitable for use with MAP gas? All the ones I can find are rated for use with Propane gas only. They tend to actually go on fire/smoke lots and disintegrate very quickly when I use a MAPP gas fuelled torch on them.
Cheers!
Hi
I normally just work with gas, my main work is installing fires and cookers.
However, I'm fitting a new bathroom at home and need to alter some radiator pipes.
The pipes in question are 15mm copper and run in under the floor from the adjoining bedroom. I can just about get my hands and...
