Discuss Heating Possible conflict between Ideal boiler and Gledhill cylinder in the UK Plumbers Forums area at PlumbersForums.net

My heating system comprises an Ideal Logic 12 boiler located downstairs and a Gledhill OV SOL cylinder located upstairs . The problem is that when the Gledhill controls for the “hot water” and “central heading” are turned on the Ideal boiler makes a constant “clicking” noise and tries to start up, however it then shuts down but repeats the cycle indefinitely. If the controls on the Gledhill cylinder are turned off the Ideal boiler does not try to fire up. Thus far I have had the system looked at by a plumber who has done work for me before and also by the Ideal engineer. The Ideal engineer said that in testing the electrical circuits in the boiler he noted that one particular circuit [unspecified] was at 50v but would then oscillate between 50v and 100v. He said that he had no idea why and suggested that it was a job for an electrician. No engineer who has visited to date has been able to identify what is causing the issue, notwithstanding that they have spent numerous hours looking at the problem. Gledhill say they no longer offer any service on this type of cylinder and as such will not send a service engineer out. The general view is that the fault lies with the Gledhill cylinder but there seems to be a shortage of Heating engineers who are familiar with this cylinder or this system.

Is anyone able to throw any light on what might be causing the problem?

Is your boiler the 'Ideal Logic Heat 12' (i.e. a heat only model)? Would it be correct to say that the system has worked in the past and this is a new fault?

Based on your description of the symptoms, it seems likely that the pump and/or zone valves are not operating correctly.

Based on what the Ideal boiler engineer said to you, the wiring of the pump and controls needs to be checked as it is likely that there is a break in continuity somewhere.

No need to restrict yourself to 'Gledhill cylinder specialists'. Any experienced heating engineer should be able to sort this out for you.
